DATASET OVERVIEW

Abstract

The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite "IBUKI" (GOSAT) is the world's first spacecraft to measure the concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane, the two major greenhouse gases, from space. GOSAT was successfully launched on January 23, 2009, and has been operating since then (as of March 2016). Through analyzing the observational data acquired by the sensors loaded on GOSAT, scientists are able to ascertain the global distribution of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations, and how the sources and sinks of these gases vary with seasons, years, and locations. These new findings will not only enhance scientific understanding on causes of global warming but also serve as fundamental information for improving climate change prediction and establishing sound plans to mitigate global warming. The GOSAT Project is a joint effort of the Ministry of the Environment Japan (MOE), the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Data Policy by Data Provider

GOSAT data products will be provided online through the data distribution system, GOSAT User Interface Gateway (GUIG) free of charge ONLY when each GOSAT data user agrees upon the purpose, and the terms and conditions for the use of the GOSAT data specified in "GOSAT data policy". The Ministry of Environment of Japan(MOE), the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) (hereafter collectively referred to as “Three Parties”), which are jointly promoting GOSAT project, own copyrights and any other intellectual property rights of all GOSAT data. Any publication of outcomes obtained in consequence of the use of GOSAT data must be accompanied by the name of Three Parties, MOE/NIES/JAXA. Users are allowed to redistribute only GOSAT standard products to third parties; as for products other than standard, users are prohibited to use the data for any other purpose than the users’ and to redistribute the data to third parties.
